Signs of illness in cats and dogs

  • Unusual behavior including aggression or lethargy
  • Unusual discharge from the eyes,nose, or other body openings
  • Increase or decrease in appetite lasting more than 24 hours
  • Excessive head shaking,scratching, or licking
  • Limping or difficulty moving
  • Unusual or fowl breath, excessive deposits on teeth
  • Changes in urination or drinking habits
  • Persistent vomiting or diarrhea
  • Painful or distended abdomen
  • Obvious injury or illness
  • Abnormal lumps or unexplained swelling
  • Cats… Straining in the litter box

Is my pet in pain?

Pets who are in pain may exhibit these behaviors

  • Excessive vocalization
  • Self afflicted injury such as biting or scratching
  • Changes in activity level
  • Trembling, circling, lying still, difficulty moving
  • Lack of grooming in cats
  • Posture changes, hunching or holding neck down
  • Aggression or acting out of character
  • Hissing, growling ,or pinning ears back

Body Temperature 100.5 – 102.5 F
Heart Rate 70 – 120 beats per minute
Respiration 18 – 34 breaths per minute

Normal levels for cats

Body Temperature 100.5 – 102.5 F
Heart Rate 120 – 140 beats per minute
Respiration 16 – 40 breaths per minute
